CODE OF PRACTICE

The Code of Practice for the Packaging of Consumer Goods is intended to promote excellence in packaging as defined by two fundamental and equally important principles.  Packaging must have the minimum net impact on the environment while fully preserving the integrity of the products it contains and meeting the customer requirements (i.e. information / conversion).  It is important that this Code be applied to the packaging of all goods in New Zealand, both domestic and imported.

The Code of Practice is a generic set of guidelines designed to assist companies when evaluating the environmental impact of packaging materials and products.  The Code lists the general requirements for best practice in packaging design and then details the environmental design requirements. It is envisaged that companies will prepare industry specific Codes of Practice in a coordinated manner through their industry associations.  These industry specific codes will reflect the policy and guiding principles inherent in this document, as well as identify those key issues appropriate to their particular industry.

Copies of the Code of Practice are available from the Packaging Council of New Zealand.  Please contact Roshni Prasad on 09 271 4044 or roshni@packaging.org.nz.
